Construction of a UGX 1.9 billion epicentre has officially commenced in Lakang Sub County, marking a major step toward improving access to essential services in the newly established and hard-to-reach area.

The project, which started this month, will deliver several critical community facilities aimed at improving healthcare, sanitation, and community services. The planned construction works include an Outpatient Department (OPD) and maternity block, three blocks of staff quarters with two housing units each, three blocks of drainable pit latrines, and a community hall that will also accommodate staff offices.

According to the Lakang Sub County Chief, David Otim, the contract for the project was awarded to Alison Consultant Company Uganda Limited. The construction is expected to be completed within 6 months.

The project is being implemented with support from The Hunger Project, working in partnership with the district and sub-county leadership. The official handover of the site to the contractor took place at the end of February, after which construction works commenced.

Leaders say the epicentre will significantly improve access to health and community services for residents of Lakang, a newly opened sub county that remains difficult to access and currently has very limited social service facilities.

The development is expected to bring renewed hope to communities in the area, many of whom have long struggled to access healthcare and other essential services due to distance and poor infrastructure. Once completed, the epicentre will serve as an important hub for healthcare delivery, community engagement, and local development initiatives.

Local authorities and partners remain optimistic that the project will play a vital role in strengthening service delivery and improving the quality of life for residents across Lakang Sub County.
