Amuru District is set to benefit from a major infrastructure development project as the **Ministry of Works and Transport**, in partnership with **STADIA** and **Segamu Consults**, undertakes the design of a key road linking the district to the West Nile region.
The proposed road project will cover approximately 100 kilometres, stretching from Awer Junction to Te-Okutu Landing Site in Lakang Sub-county. Once completed, the road is expected to significantly improve connectivity, enhance trade, and open up economic opportunities between **Amuru District** and the wider West Nile region.
The design phase, which commenced last week, is expected to run for 12 months. According to Social Development Specialist **Noah Higenyi**, the process will involve extensive community engagement to ensure inclusivity and transparency.
He noted that the consultants will conduct inception meetings at district level, followed by sub-county, parish, and village-level engagements to sensitize communities about the project and gather feedback. Additional activities will include technical surveys, demarcation of road reserves using mark stones and ribbons, and the establishment of mechanisms to receive and address grievances from stakeholders.
Efforts are also underway to secure office space at the district headquarters to provide a central point for handling project-related concerns.
During an inception meeting held on 30th April 2026, the project team presented the proposed road alignment options and received input from district stakeholders ahead of submission to the Ministry of Works and Transport.
District leaders welcomed the initiative, describing it as a transformative development for the area. The LCV Chairperson, represented by Vice Chairperson Denis Rom, assured the project team of the community’s support and hospitality throughout the implementation period.
Security officials also emphasized the need for timely execution of the project to enable communities to start benefiting without delay.
Meanwhile, Kilak County Member of Parliament **Gilbert Olanya** urged local leaders to caution residents against selling their land prematurely. He warned that opportunistic individuals may attempt to acquire land along the proposed road corridor in anticipation of future compensation.
Once implemented, the road project is expected to play a critical role in unlocking the economic potential of Amuru District, improving access to markets, and strengthening regional integration.
