Bringing Essential Services Closer to the People: The Elegu Modern Market Project
The Government of Uganda, with support from development partners, continues to invest in infrastructure that brings essential services closer to the people and promotes inclusive local economic development. One such initiative is the construction of a modern, climate-resilient market in Elegu, a strategic border town that plays a key role in regional trade.
The project was officially launched during a groundbreaking ceremony presided over by the First Deputy Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga. She emphasized the importance of addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges, particularly flooding, to ensure that communities and traders can access services without disruption. Her remarks underscored government’s commitment to sustainable solutions that support livelihoods and economic growth.
The new Elegu Market is designed to serve up to 1,500 vendors and will provide a safe, organized, and dignified trading environment. In addition to improved trading spaces, the facility will offer essential services such as affordable banking, restaurants, childcare facilities, waste management points, and enhanced security. These services are intended to reduce the distance and cost associated with accessing basic amenities, especially for women, persons with disabilities, and small-scale traders.
Development partners highlighted the broader social and economic benefits of the project, noting that improved infrastructure contributes to better health, safety, and productivity. The market’s climate-resilient design will ensure continuity of trade throughout the year, minimizing losses caused by extreme weather conditions and improving the overall business environment.
The project is being implemented by the Government of Uganda with support from the European Union and the Embassy of Denmark under the Global Gateway Team Europe Initiative, with an investment of €9.8 million (approximately UGX 41 billion).
Through initiatives such as the Elegu Modern Market, government and its partners are strengthening service delivery, supporting local enterprises, and fostering inclusive development by bringing essential services closer to the people and creating opportunities for sustainable economic growth.
